Skälvum Church is regarded by many as one of the most remarkable churches in the Diocese of Skara. Built entirely of finely dressed sandstone during the first half of the 12th century, it is a well-preserved Romanesque apse church designed by the master builder Othelric.

Skälvum Church

An inscription carved into the tympanum above the west entrance reads "Othelrik me fecit"—Latin for "Othelric made me." Othelric, believed to have come from northern Germany, was one of the foremost architects and stonemasons working in Västergötland during the 12th century.

Tree-ring dating of the roof timbers above the nave has shown that the trees used for the construction were felled in 1136, providing a remarkably precise date for the building. The church was constructed in the Romanesque style and consists of a west tower, nave, chancel, and semicircular apse. The tower is believed to have been added shortly after the nave and chancel were completed.

Othelric also carved the church's baptismal font. Around its eight arcades are reliefs depicting scenes including the Baptism of Christ with an angel, a man battling a beast, a centaur combat, and a bishop thought to represent the Bishop of Skara at the time the church was built.

The original stone altar dates from the 12th century. In a niche stands an outstanding wooden sculpture of the Madonna on the Crescent Moon, a North German work from the late Middle Ages.

The ceiling paintings, consisting mainly of floral vines and decorative motifs, were created in the 1640s by an artist associated with the Läckö School. Above the chancel arch is a dramatic depiction of the Last Judgement, showing Christ enthroned, surrounded by trumpet-blowing angels as He separates the saved from the damned, who are swallowed by a great dragon. For reasons unknown, the painting's colour scheme was never fully completed.

Apart from the enlarged windows and the removal of the south porch during the 19th century, the church has retained much of its original medieval character.

You can reach Skälvum Church by taking Västtrafik bus route 106 between Götene and Lidköping. Get off at the Skälvum bus stop.
