5 tips along the Göta Canal

There is a lot to experience along the Göta Canal. In addition to boat trips and beautiful nature along the gravelled cycling and hiking trail, there are many hidden gems worth visiting. Here are some of them.

1. Canal and Maritime Museum

The Göta Canal begins in Sjötorp by Lake Vänern. This summer idyll is full of life during the summer when many visitors start their Göta Canal journey in Sjötorp. In the old red shipyard warehouse by the upper harbour basin, you will find the Canal Museum on two floors. Here, exciting stories are told about historic shipping on Lake Vänern, Lake Vättern, and the Göta Canal. The museum is located on the second and third floors with stairs between levels, there is no elevator. On the ground floor, there is a café.

2. Picnic with smoked fish

Planning a bike ride along the Göta Canal? We recommend picking up a lunch package from Maltes Fisk. Taste locally caught smoked fish from Lake Vänern. Perfect for a picnic somewhere in the green along the canal.

3. Harbour Warehouse in Lyrestad

Just 7 km of cycling from Sjötorp, you reach the next canal village - Lyrestad. Right next to the canal is the old red harbour warehouse, now home to the local heritage association with a museum and café. Over three floors, exhibits include a telephone collection, agricultural tools, interior settings from old homes, and a country store from the turn of the century.

4. Coffee at Daisy’s Place

This cozy café is located right at the intersection where the bridge crosses the Göta Canal in Lyrestad. In addition to homemade cakes, it also sells small curiosities and gift items. From the outdoor seating, you can enjoy views of the canal and passing boats.

5. Mini Canal in Norrkvarn

At Norrqvarn Hotel & Resort by Vänerport, the entire West Gothia section of the Göta Canal is built in miniature. Children can play and explore the water’s route from Lake Vänern to Lake Vättern via the canal, with locks, bridges, and small lakes. Toy boats are available to rent, and when returned, the children get an ice cream. The old mill has been converted into a hotel and restaurant where you can both sleep and eat well. There are also stumps and mushrooms to spend the night in. An exciting experience for the whole family.
