Klosterängen's nature reserve
Lugnås

A beautiful environment with a long history

The nature reserve Klosterängen - the Monastery Pasture - lies on the western side of Lugnås Mountain, about a kilometre north of Lugnås Church. Here, you'll find grove-like deciduous forest, stunning oaks and a long history.

The monastery was built in the 1100's, and it's said that there were traces visible from the lumber building as late as the second half of the 19th century. Klosterängen was supposedly the original spot for the Cistercien monastery that was later built in Varnhem, between Skövde and Skara. In the reserve, there's plenty of deciduos forest forming groves, and in the woods, one will find mainly oak, linden, maple, and ash tree. Except for the so-called monastery spring in the middle of the reserve, you can also find different herbs such as hepatica, coral wort, alpine enchanter's nightshade, and solomon's seal.

You're welcome to visit Klosterängen's Nature Reserve, but do keep in mind that it's forbidden to:

  • destroy or damage natural items or surfaces
  • Cut down, break twigs and branches, or in any other way damage living or dead trees and bushes
  • Damage vegetation in any other way, for example by digging up plants or pick flowers
  • Catch any animal
  • Use bikes, motor vehicles, or any other manner of transportation other than to the official parking site
  • Use a tent, though the landowner has the ability to give permission to camp on the parking lot
  • Make a fire
  • Bring any sort of contraption, including posters and signs.
