Vårvik Church
Bengtsfors

Beautiful church on an island in lake Västra Silen between Bengtsfors & Gustavsfors.

Vårvik Church (Vårviks Kyrka) is characterised by its dominant lighthouse, which is crowned by an octagonal superstructure with a gilded cross.

The current church, built in the neoclassical style, has been preserved in its entirety since its construction in 1843-46, based on drawings by architect Johan Fredrik Åbom. Above the church door is a black wrought iron sign with the text "Upbygd år 1845" (‘Built in 1845’).

The lighthouse tower
The location by the lake was probably chosen for communication reasons, as waterways were preferable to inaccessible roads and bridle paths on land. The exterior of the church is dominated by the lighthouse tower. Since ancient times, a lantern has been lit in the hood every evening, perhaps to guide those travelling on the lake.

Previous churches on the site
The current church was preceded by two earlier ones. A wooden church built in 1662 and, before that, a possible stave church from the 13th century. A plank from the oldest church is preserved at the Swedish History Museum, along with a copper processional crucifix with enamel inlays from the 13th-century Limoges in France.

Popular tourist destination
Vårvik Church is a popular attraction in the area and is considered one of the most beautifully situated churches in Dalsland. It is surrounded by water, with only a narrow strip of road connecting the island to the mainland.
