When autumn arrives, the Göta Canal transforms into a peaceful landscape full of colour. The trees along the canal shift to shades of red, yellow and orange, and the air becomes crisp and refreshing. It’s the perfect season for walks, relaxed bike rides and family outings.
Late summer and early autumn are wonderful times for a bike ride along the canal. The water lies still like a mirror, the air is fresh and the leaves begin to change colour. The historic towpath you cycle on is car-free all year round, but in autumn you also avoid the busy summer crowds.
Remember to plan your bike trip in advance and check which cafés, lunch spots and accommodations are open.
There are plenty of ways to enjoy nature. Walk along beautiful forest trails, follow the canal bank, or make detours to nature reserves and viewpoints. You can also go fishing, paddling or play a round of golf.
One of autumn’s highlights is a visit to the beautiful salmon ladder in the Gullspång River, about 20 minutes from the Göta Canal. In October and November, salmon and trout make their way upstream to spawn, and the ladder helps the fish reach their spawning grounds.
