During winter, the Göta Canal is closed to boat traffic. Instead, the area invites you to enjoy winter activities such as sauna bathing, hiking trips, and skiing when the weather allows.
When frost or a thin layer of snow covers the landscape, the Göta Canal becomes a calm and atmospheric place to hike. The towpath is easy to follow even in winter, and you can also enjoy quiet forests, open views, and nearby trails. Why not pack a picnic and grill sausages at a shelter?
Keep in mind that some trails and paths may be icy and slippery this time of year.
Around the Göta Canal you’ll find several spectacular spots for a sauna, from floating sauna boats to wood-fired hot tubs. After some time in the sauna, there’s nothing like stepping into the cold water for a refreshing winter dip.
Winter is a perfect time for museums, art galleries, and local craft shops. You can also go on an adventurous paddling trip or try ice fishing. Always check the opening hours for shops, museums, and other attractions.
While you can’t control the weather, when winter brings snow and ice there are plenty of opportunities for winter sports.
When the ice is thick enough, many enjoy long-distance ice skating along the canal – but be sure to have knowledge of ice conditions and the right equipment.
Some winters, Stenkällegården opens its ski slopes in Tiveden, a popular destination for families.
In December, towns and villages are decorated with Christmas trees and sparkling lights. Enjoy Christmas markets, festive meals, music, Lucia processions, and holiday shopping.
The Göta Canal area offers plenty of cozy restaurants, charming cafés, and comfortable accommodation. Remember that some places are seasonal, so always check opening hours on their websites or social media.
