Great family experiences

Visit a zoo, watch the cranes, go hiking or explore the Book Adventure. Around Lake Hornborga in Falköping, Skara and Skövde, there are plenty of fun experiences for the whole family. Here you’ll find 10 tips for wonderful days around the lake.

1. Activities at Lake Hornborga

On the eastern side of Lake Hornborga, at Fågeludden, naturum Hornborgasjön stands on stilts in the water. Here you’ll find two observation towers and hides where you can watch birds up close. Café Doppingen serves delicious coffee, pastries and lunch, with a large outdoor seating area overlooking the lake. Naturum also organizes many activities, including birdwatching classes and treasure hunts. In the southern part of the lake you’ll find Trandansen (“The Crane Dance”), where you can see the cranes at their very best. The cranes gather here from late March to early April.

2. Family activities on the mountain

The table mountain Mösseberg in Falköping is full of experiences for the whole family. Here you’ll find a cozy little zoo with playgrounds, pedal cars and barbecue areas. The mountain also offers a disc golf course, fitness trails and an adventure playground. Along the edge of the hillside, you’ll find a restaurant and café with lovely views.

3. Play, learn and explore at the Science Center

At Dalénium Science Center in Stenstorp, exciting experiences await both young and old. Take on the laser maze, build a giant cube out of soft blocks, or drive a small forestry machine.

4. Challenges in technology and science

Skövde’s most obvious destination for curious families offers plenty of challenges in technology and science. At Balthazar Science Center, you can put your brains to work in the Math Bazaar, build creative creations in the Maker Workshop and the Lego Castle, or why not practice using a pipette and create pipette pixel art in the Lab? Café Kretsloppet is there to take care of any rumbling tummies.

5. Stay in a Moose cabin at a wildlife park

Wrågården has become known for its spectacular accommodation, where the whole family can sleep right in the middle of the moose and fallow deer park in a cabin shaped like a moose. But there are plenty of activities to enjoy even without staying overnight. Book a bison safari, admire the magnificent animals in the moose park, or why not try football golf, padel, or a five-event challenge? At the farm shop, you can enjoy a coffee break or buy the farm’s own pizza.

6. Go canoeing

Experience the tranquility and beautiful scenery from the water at Herrtorps Qvarn. Glide along the river Flian by canoe, surrounded by lush greenery and rich birdlife. Paddle at your own pace, take a break along the shoreline, or join an exciting beaver safari. After your paddle, the charming mill house awaits, offering cosy accommodation and motorhome pitches. Canoe trips must be booked in advance, and the beaver safari is available during the summer season.

7. A Fun Adventure water park for the whole family

Do you love jumping into the waves and trying exciting water slides? Or would you rather relax in warm pools? Either way, you’ll always find something that suits you at Arena Skövde’s adventure water park. There is also a 25-metre pool for fitness swimming.

8.   Bilingetrollet’s forest  

Follow in the footsteps of the Billinge Troll along the magical trail on Billingen! Along the 2.6-kilometre path, you’ll find stations where you can take part in exciting and fun activities. Bilingetrollet’s forest is a true gem for anyone who wants to experience and learn more about nature. Visit Billingetrollet and his friends around Lake Åsbotorpsjön on Mount Billingen, peek inside the little houses, and explore the surroundings. It’s an exciting and accessible outing for the whole family.

9. The Book adventure with Birger the owl

Join Birger the Owl on a journey through the history of books at the exhibition’s interactive play stations – from storytelling around a crackling fire, to rune stones and the fascinating art of printing. Here, you can play school the way it was in the past and browse through old children’s books. Or why not take a look at Sweden’s oldest book, which is more than 850 years old? Bokäventyret also features temporary exhibitions from time to time.

10. Exciting museums

In the heart of a rich cultural landscape lies the Västergötlands museum. Here, you can explore more than 10,000 years of the region’s unique history. Experience medieval Skara, admire the well-preserved Bronze Age shields, discover the fascinating exhibition about how the mighty inland ice sheet shaped human life, and meet Kata — the woman who ruled the great estate in Varnhem during the 11th century.

At Falbygdens Museum in Falköping, you can, among other things, see the skeleton of the oldest domesticated dog in the Nordic countries and hear the story of the gold neck collar from Ålleberg. In the children’s museum, there is a creative corner, historical costumes to try on, and a little shop where you can play store.
