Rules for Motorhomes, Caravans and Rooftop Tents
Sweden offers endless opportunities to experience nature, but if you are travelling by motorhome, caravan, or vehicle with a rooftop tent, there are a few important rules to be aware of. While Sweden’s Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten) gives people extensive freedom to enjoy the outdoors, it does not apply to motor vehicles. Understanding the regulations helps protect nature and ensures consideration for landowners and other visitors.
The Right of Public Access Does Not Apply to Motor Vehicles
Many people associate the Right of Public Access with the freedom to explore and stay in nature. However, this right does not extend to motorhomes, caravans, or other motor vehicles. Unlike a tent, a motor vehicle cannot be driven into or parked in natural areas under the Right of Public Access.
Vehicles equipped with rooftop tents are also subject to the same regulations as other motor vehicles.
The Off-Road Driving Act Protects Nature
To protect nature and prevent damage to land and vegetation, Sweden has legislation known as the Off-Road Driving Act (Terrängkörningslagen). The law prohibits the use of motor vehicles in off-road terrain, which includes most natural areas throughout the country.
The term off-road terrain covers much more than forests and wilderness. Beaches, grazing land, parks, meadows, and grassy areas are also classified as terrain under the law. This means that motorhomes, caravans, and other motor vehicles may not be driven onto these areas, even if they appear suitable for parking or overnight stays.
The law applies to everyone, including landowners. As a result, a landowner cannot grant permission for someone else to drive a motor vehicle in terrain if doing so would violate the Off-Road Driving Act.
By following these regulations, you help protect sensitive natural environments and preserve Sweden’s unique landscapes for future generations to enjoy.
Where Can You Park and Stay Overnight?
You may park along roads where parking is permitted, provided that the area is not classified as off-road terrain. Your vehicle must not damage the land, obstruct the landowner’s activities, or create a hazard for other road users.
If you plan to stay near residential properties, it is always advisable to ask the landowner for permission, even if you only intend to stay for one night.
Overnight Stays with Motorhomes and Caravans
There is no specific national time limit for how long a motor vehicle may remain parked beside a road where parking is allowed. However, longer stays should be avoided unless permission has been obtained from the landowner.
Motorhomes, caravans, and vehicles with rooftop tents are often perceived as more intrusive than traditional tents. For this reason, travellers should take extra care to respect nearby residents, landowners, and the surrounding environment.
Staying Overnight at Rest Areas
Rest areas can be a convenient option for an overnight stop during your journey. In general, you may stay for up to 24 hours on weekdays. On weekends and public holidays, longer stays may be permitted until the next working day.
Always check local signage, as specific restrictions may apply. Some municipalities have additional regulations governing overnight stays and the parking of motorhomes and caravans at rest areas.
Rules for Private Roads
The owner of a private road has the right to decide whether motor vehicle traffic is permitted. They may restrict or prohibit traffic altogether, or only allow certain types of vehicles.
You may park a motor vehicle immediately adjacent to a private road, provided that no damage is caused to the land and the landowner’s activities are not disrupted. Your vehicle must also not obstruct traffic or create a safety risk.
In general, the same parking regulations apply on private roads as on public roads. However, landowners may introduce additional parking conditions through local regulations and signage. Always respect any signs and instructions displayed on site.
Respect Nature and Local Communities
As a motorhome traveller, you play an important role in helping to preserve Sweden’s natural environment. By following local regulations, using designated campsites and motorhome pitches, and showing consideration for landowners, residents, and wildlife, you contribute to sustainable outdoor recreation and help ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy Sweden’s beautiful landscapes.
