Spring in Destination Läckö-Kinnekulle
Spring Highlights – Blossoms, Rare Landscapes and Flowing Water
Spring on Kinnekulle is a season of transformation. As the light returns and nature awakens, the plateau bursts into colour, fragrance and movement — making it one of the most magical times of year to visit.
Wild Garlic & Rare Orchids on Kinnekulle
Spring on Kinnekulle is something truly special. As the season unfolds, the forest floors transform into a sea of white blossoms and the air fills with the sweet, unmistakable scent of wild garlic.
Two of the most spectacular places to experience this natural phenomenon are Munkängarna and Västerplana Storäng. Here, wild garlic carpets the ground in spring, creating an almost magical atmosphere. Wild garlic is relatively rare in Sweden, but on Kinnekulle it thrives in abundance. Please remember that picking wild garlic is not permitted within the nature reserves.
Early summer brings another botanical highlight. Just above the Hjelmsäter estate, you can spot one of Kinnekulle’s most remarkable flowers, an orchid known as Guckusko. Blooming in early to mid-June for only about two weeks, this rare orchid is a must-see for nature lovers. It is uncommon throughout most of Sweden, with only a few stronger populations in northeastern Uppland and parts of Jämtland.

The Power of Spring at Martorpsfallet
Spring is also the best time to visit Martorpsfallet waterfall. As snowmelt rushes through the limestone cliffs, the waterfall reaches its full strength. Water cascades dramatically down the rock face, creating an impressive and refreshing natural spectacle.
During dry summer months, the waterfall can nearly disappear, as the water instead flows underground through cracks in the bedrock. Experiencing it in spring ensures you see it at its most powerful.

A Sea of Wood Anemones at Villa Giacomina and Rare Limestone Grasslands at Österplana hed och vall
In March and April, the park surrounding Villa Giacomina turns into a white floral dream. The forest floor becomes completely carpeted with blooming wood anemones, creating a breathtaking sea of white beneath the trees. It’s the perfect setting for a peaceful spring walk, accompanied by birdsong and fresh countryside air. From the park, visitors can also enjoy sweeping views of Lake Vänern, Sweden’s largest lake with Lidköping and the Kinnekulle landscape forming a scenic backdrop.
Just a short distance away, the scenery shifts dramatically at Österplana hed och vall. Thanks to Kinnekulle’s unique geology and mild microclimate, rare limestone grasslands known as alvar have developed here, a habitat found in only a few places in the world. In spring, the open moorland near the church comes alive with Early Purple Orchids in full bloom. Their vivid colour contrasts beautifully with the rugged terrain, offering a striking and distinctly Nordic landscape experience.
