Travelling to and around Mariestad municipality
There are several ways to travel to Mariestad. Here you’ll find useful information to help you plan your journey to and around Mariestad municipality using public transport.
Train
With the Kinnekullebanan (Kinnekulle Line), you can travel directly from Gothenburg or Örebro, which are the line’s end stations, to Mariestad. There are several direct departures, although if you are travelling from Gothenburg you may in some cases need to change trains in Herrljunga. If travelling from Stockholm, you can sometimes change trains in Hallsberg to continue to Mariestad.
The Kinnekulle train stops in, among other places, Lugnås, Hasslerör and Lyrestad.

In 2018, the stretch of the Kinnekulle Line between Mariestad and Lidköping, passing over Kinnekulle, was named Sweden’s most scenic railway route.
You can also travel by train to Töreboda or Skövde and then continue by bus for a short transfer to Mariestad.
Bus line 504 runs between Mariestad and Töreboda.
Bus line 500 runs between Mariestad and Skövde.

Once in Mariestad, you can travel by bus to destinations such as Sjötorp (502), Torsö (511) and Lugnås (513 and 506). To several destinations that are not served at all times by regular public transport, you can travel by demand-responsive transport (Närtrafik). Within specific time intervals, you travel between a Närtrafik stop and any address in the countryside. The journey must be booked in advance by phone and costs the same as a regular single ticket within the municipality.
