To live at one with nature, make sure the animals are well cared for and to meet pleasant customers, is the communal driving force of Two Farmers. They each have their own farms but work together – because it’s more fun.
Farmers Mats Johansson and Anders Jonsson live a about twenty kilometres apart and have been both friends and colleagues for many years. They founded Two Farmers to get closer to their customers, find new markets and above all: to have fun together.
Central to the Two Farmers is the farm belonging to Mats in idyllic Käckestad just outside Mariestad, where his forbearers have farmed the land for generations. It is from here the friends sell their certified organic beef in their “unusual farm shop” as they call it. It is a sort of ambulatory pop-up shop, which is sometimes found on the farm but just as often housed in a local facility or out in the open. Sometimes as far away as Stockholm, where the farmers have a regular clientele and a delivery point.
Good for people and animals
The Two Farmers cattle are Hereford and Simmental breeds. They are grass-fed only and are reared slowly in the pastures surrounding the farms. Natural grazing provides both flavourful meat and a stress-free existence for the animals – and additionally a beautiful landscape with red and white cows on chlorophyll-rich meadows. Slaughtering takes place on a small scale at a nearby abattoir, to which the farmers themselves transport their animals.
Help finding the right cut
The meat is often sold frozen, but sometimes fresh if newly slaughtered. It is hung for two weeks, cut and sold either in boxes or portions. Special cuts such as fillet or sirloin steak are of course included in the selection, but Mats and Anders also point out the potential that exists in the nutritious and relatively cheap forequarter meat. They enjoy meeting their customers and will happily help them find the right cut for the right occasion.
