Hike through history and experience wonderful views

The trail begins at Kungslena Church, which was built during the 13th century and is likely preceded by a wooden church on the same site. The church was constructed on the orders of Erik the Lisp and Lame, in memory of his father Erik Knutsson's victory at Lena. In the Battle of Lena in 1208, it is told that the Danes burned down the previous church. The history goes on to say that two years after the battle, the parishioners built the new church.

The church's distinctive exterior with its three towers is unique. There's a larger tower in the middle of the nave and two smaller ones above its gables. Legend has it that on Easter Day in 1258, Birger Jarl attended the high mass in the church along with his son-in-law King Håkan of Norway and his son Valdemar. In memory of this event, the three towers were erected. The middle and largest of them symbolizes Birger Jarl.

The paintings in the church were executed in 1749 by Johannes Risberg. Underneath these paintings, fragments of medieval paintings from the later part of the 15th century, created by Master Amund, can be seen. These 15th-century paintings likely existed throughout the entire church before being painted over in 1749. However, some of the medieval paintings have been preserved.

The trail then continues past Lilleklint, where you can find various plants such as night-scented orchids and wintergreens. You'll then hike through diverse forest terrain and pass by the "Tuppasten" (Rooster Stone), which, according to legend, is said to turn one rotation each time the rooster crows.

Eventually, you will arrive at Högeklint, which offers a wonderful view of the countryside.

The descent from the mountain leads through deciduous forests and flowering meadows down to Lena Castle. The castle was constructed from stone and was primarily intended as a high-status building. However, the elevated location wasn't chosen for the view but for the castle's defense, as conflicts were not uncommon in the area.

Sights to see

While you're in Kungslena, do consider visiting the farm shop "bi&bär," which is more than just honey. They also offer honey flavored with various essential oils. They create jams, juices, and marmalades from the berries, among other products.
