Walking in Läckö-Kinnekulle
Lidköping

Explore Läckö-Kinnekulle by walking in beautiful environments

One of the best ways to explore Läckö-Kinnekulle is by walking one of the lovely trails in the area. Several of the paths are new, so even if you’ve been here before there’s plenty more to discover.

Walking in Läckö-Kinnekulle

Skaraborg has been called the cradle of Sweden, and the evidence of that long history can be seen, amongst other things, in the medieval churches and abbeys found here. A good way to combine nature and culture is to follow one of the Pilgrim’s Trails. You can walk all the way from Läckö Castle to Forshem if you want to.

An excellent starting place is the Kinnekulle Observation Tower, where several different paths converge. The tower is on the top of the plateau, and on a clear day you can see up to 50 kilometres away, so you can appreciate the magnificent view as well as get a fascinating overall impression of the area.

Walking in Läckö-Kinnekulle also takes you back into the past. Several of the trails pass some interesting historic monuments, including ones from the middle ages, and when Sweden converted to Christianity. That part of our history is of course more visible on the Pilgrim’s Trails, which are meant to feed both body and soul.  Choose to walk a few hours – or several days.

Kinnekulle

Kinnekulle has long been celebrated for its rich flora. When the famous Swedish botanist Carl von Linné visited this 306 m high plateau, back in the 1700s, he waxed lyrical about it and described Kinnekulle as one of the most remarkable places in the whole country.  Kinnekulle was formed 500 million years ago and is to this day a place of great interest for geologists. In the large quarry you can see for example 40 metres of Kinnekulle’s vast limestone strata.

The rich and unique flora on Kinnekulle, together with the fact that the whole surrounding area blooms with creativity, makes it easy to see how it got its nickname “The flowering mountain”.

When you visit Kinnekulle you don’t have to go far to see the different sights. You’ll find an observation tower, waterfalls, medieval churches, ancient rock carvings, limestone quarries, craft centres, walking trails, nature reserves, go cart tracks, beautiful farms, camping sites, swimming areas and much more, all within a short distance of each other.

Kållandsö

On the island of Kållandsö, as well as the better known attractions such as Läckö Castle and Spiken Fishing Village, you’ll find other gems like Naven Lighthouse and the Eken archipelago, with its 120 islands, and countless coves and skerries. There are also some exceptional nature experiences to be found there, including amongst other things five coastal walks which vary in length, terrain and scenery.

Along the various trails you’ll find picnic tables and benches to stop at, as well as barbecue areas.  There are usually toilets nearby. Take food with you, or stock up in Spiken’s fish shops.
