On Saturday, September 4, 2004, the Oyster Academy was founded in Grebbestad. It is a non-profit association for everyone interested in oysters. Its purpose is to preserve the full potential of our wonderful Swedish oysters and to support and inspire oyster lovers, restaurateurs, fishermen, suppliers, divers, and researchers. In short, everyone who in any way comes into contact with this fantastic shellfish.
In 2005, the Oyster Academy received the honorary award Årets Skarpsill from the industry organization Svensk Fisk.
The Nordic Oyster Opening Championship is an annual competition that brings together enthusiasts from all over the Nordic region to compete in the art of opening oysters in the fastest possible time. Grebbestad hosts this spectacular event, celebrating the delicacies of the sea and the skill required to handle them.
The oyster festivities begin already on Friday evening with the Open Grebbestad Championship, where anyone can sign up and test their oyster-opening skills. The celebration continues on Saturday, and as a visitor you can enjoy local oysters from Havstenssunds Ostron, delicious food, and good drinks throughout the weekend. You can read more about these wonderful events here!
Oyster Day is celebrated throughout Grebbestad with great pomp and circumstance during the second weekend of September each year. You can eat oysters and drink sparkling champagne. Take the opportunity to meet oyster experts and go on an oyster tour at the town’s restaurants.
