Bengtsfors

City Centre and central city

The main village in the heart of nature welcomes you with hotels and hostels, restaurants, cafés and a huge variety of shops.

With its 3600 inhabitants, Bengtsfors is the biggest village in our municipality. You still live in the middle of nature here, too. Bengtsfors is beautifully situated along the shore of lake Lelången and lake Bengtsbrohöljen.

The Dalsland canal (link information in swedish, pdf-file in english) leads through Bengtsfors and our spatious yacht harbour invites the guests to stay for a while.  If you don’t have your own (or hired) boat, you might fancy a trip with one of our passenger boats travelling on the canal to enjoy the gorgious views on locks and lakes. For the active visitor there are possibilities to rent a canoe or a bike to get closer to nature. Hiking in different degrees of difficulty and length is also a favorite. On the former railwaystation (DVVJ) you can hire a trolley and, if you dare, ride all the way to Årjäng. But you don’t have to, you can also turn around in Gustavsfors after having enjoyed the place.

For the real tough ones, there is the canoe marathon in the beginning of august, the second saturday to be exact. This is a great challenge: to paddle the most demanding canoe race of Sweden in the most beautiful landscape of Sweden.

In the centre village you’ll find besides schools even medical service, a pharmacy and dentists. There are several little shops, food shops and restaurants or cafés. Here is also the famous open air museum with typical houses and furniture from Dalsland and an amazing view over the surroundings. Nearby the open air museum Gammelgården is the straw museum Halmens Hus, the only one of its kind in Scandinavia, telling about the important art of straw plaiting developped out of cottage industry and even showing modern straw art items.
