ABOUT THE STEAMBOAT

History

Every year loads of people board Trafik (Traffic), the old steamboat from 1892. Perhaps they are going on an excursion to the island of Visingsö or taking a trip round Lake Vättern. Whatever the purpose of their trip, the journey offers an historical adventure and sometimes an insight into how a steam engine works. “Lots of people want to come down into the engine room,” says Göran Jonsson, the on-board engineer and former chairman of the boat’s association.

The steamboat Trafik was originally built to ship goods, livestock and people from Hjo to Hästholmen on the other side of the lake. The boat trips on Lake Vättern were gradually wound down and they ceased altogether in 1959. Afterwards, Trafik was laid up in Hjo harbour and at one point she was in such poor condition that she sank to the lakebed. However, in 1972 local residents made an appeal in Hjo’s local newspaper for help to save the vessel. An association was formed, "the friends of Trafik", which began a salvage operation that would last up until 1977. Since then the steamboat has puffed along like never before and been awarded the municipality’s cultural prize and named Working Life Museum of the Year and even Hjo Resident of the Year. In addition, the boat has the highest historical preservation listing in Sweden.
