Håverud lockstation, Dalsland Canal
In Håverud there are 4 locks and the famous aqueduct! But, here is also the only place in Europe (us knowingly) where a road bridge, a train bridge and an aqueduct meet!
Håverud – Where Engineering Meets Nature
Lock chambers: 4
Elevation: 9,9 m
Duration: 1 hour
Håverud is home to one of Sweden’s most fascinating waterway constructions: a unique combination of four canal locks (locks 4–7) and an impressive aqueduct built in 1868 that carries boats high above the rushing river. The locks together create a dramatic 9.9-meter elevation difference, guiding boats through a short canal stretch before it curves left toward a double lock. At the top, vessels pass beneath a classic railway drawbridge with a clearance of 8.5 meters.
Immediately after the third lock, the canal enters the famous aqueduct (32,5 m long, 4,36 m wide, 1,8 m deep and anchored on sturdy granite piers) that leads the canal over an old river channel (Håverud Rapids).
After the aqueduct is a dam and a short stretch of canal before the uppermost lock in Håverud. A large road bridge arches over this part of the canal.
Dalsland Center – The Heart of Håverud
Right next to the locks, Dalsland Center offers a vibrant hub of summer activity. Enjoy local events and exhibitions, visit the tourist information center, and dine at the Brasserie famous for its delicious fish dishes. Browse for antiques and vintage finds, and don’t miss the Canal Museum, which tells the story of this engineering marvel.
There's another restaurant right next to the road bridge, or relax with a coffee at the cozy café inside the Dalsland Center.
Stay by the Water
Make the most of your visit by staying overnight. Choose between Håverud’s campsite, a friendly hostel at the museum, or one of the charming waterside cabins overlooking the locks.
