Large farmhouse dating back to the early 19th century

Säbygården is a large farmhouse dating back to the early 19th century and is one of the best-preserved houses of this kind in Bohuslän.

With a deliberate dignity, the house stands near the chestnut tree. Just like its inhabitants over the years, it has grown accustomed to being met with respect. When the last owner moved out in 1976, there was an interest from the municipality to take over the house. The Säbygården Foundation was established with the purpose of managing, operating, and preserving Säbygården as a cultural and historical landmark. Säbygården is not a museum in the traditional sense but aims to welcome its guests as if someone still lived in the house.

While you're in the area, there's a delightful hiking trail, the 'Säby Hiking Trail,' that meanders through open landscapes, pastures, and forests, along paths and roads, through Knutstången to Säby Island, ending here at the old stone cottage. Säby Island holds a lot of history. During the fantastic herring period of the 18th century, there were eight herring factories and a herring saltery here. When the herring fishing declined, the island's population decreased, and the settlements disappeared, only to be repopulated again from the mid-19th century.

Don't miss a visit to Tjörn's largest farm shop, 'Hoga Saluhall,' where local farmers sell their fine produce. The selection varies and follows the seasons, but all products are locally sourced and carefully chosen.
