Lake Mullsjön - Fishing and Swimming

Mullsjön is a small lake just west of Hjo. Here you can enjoy nature on foot or by bike, go fishing, swim, windsurf or simply have a cosy picnic. With its convenient distance from Hjo town centre, it’s easy to get here.

HOW DO I GET TO MULLSJÖN?

Mullsjön is about 4 km from Hjo, and you can get there by:

  • Bicycle
  • Car
  • On foot (hiking route) via Hjoån Valley Nature Reserve
  • Running (great training distance from town)

 

WHERE CAN I SWIM AT MULLSJÖN?

STÄMMORNA – PICNIC AND SWIMMING AREA

On the north side of the lake you’ll find Stämmorna, with:

  • picnic area
  • small barbecue spot
  • seating
  • nature toilet
  • nearby parking

VARPET – FAMILY-FRIENDLY SWIMMING SPOT

On the south side lies Varpet, a popular swimming and picnic area. The water is very shallow, making it ideal for families and for anyone who finds Lake Vättern a bit too cold.

At Varpet you’ll also find:

  • parking
  • nature toilet
  • boat launch

 

CAN I WALK OR CYCLE AROUND THE LAKE?

Yes! There is an approx. 8 km trail around Mullsjön, perfect for walking, running or cycling.

Good to know:

  • the trail is unmarked
  • terrain varies between forest paths and gravel roads
  • mountain bikes are recommended (standard bikes may need to be pushed in places)

 

CAN I FISH IN MULLSJÖN?

Yes — Mullsjön is known as a fish-rich lake, especially popular for winter perch fishing. In summer, boat fishing for perch and pike is common.

DO I NEED A FISHING LICENCE?

  • Fishing from shore and jetties is free
  • Fishing from a boat requires a fishing licence
  • Please respect private property: fishing is prohibited in certain areas along the shore

  • Day licence: SEK 40 per person
  • Annual licence: SEK 300 (valid 12 months from purchase)
  • Licences are personal
  • Everyone in the boat needs a licence
  • Children up to 15 years old fish for free (no licence required)

Licences are sold by local contacts or via Visit Hjo Tourist Information (Swish available).

 

CAN I HIRE A BOAT?

Yes. Rowing boats are available to hire in Bengstorp, either by the hour or for a full day.

 

 

IS MULLSJÖN GOOD FOR WINDSURFING OR KITESURFING?

Yes. Because the lake is very shallow, Mullsjön is well suited for both.

 

WHAT IS THE NATURE LIKE AT MULLSJÖN?

Mullsjön is one of the area’s most fish-rich lakes, with plenty of pike, perch and roach. The shoreline is shallow, so fishing is often best from a boat. The water quality is good, with visibility of around 3 metres.

 

WHAT CAN I DO AT MULLSJÖN IN WINTER?

When the lake freezes, Mullsjön is suitable for:

  • ice skating
  • skiing across the ice
  • ice fishing

Always follow safety advice when visiting frozen lakes.

 

WHO LOOKS AFTER THE LAKE?

The lake is managed by the Mullsjön Fishing Conservation Association, which shares information and updates on social media and via its website.
