Västra Vätterleden is a long-distance trail running along the western shore of Lake Vättern in western Sweden. The trail links the Bergslagsleden in the north with the Smålandsleden in the south. Its total length is approximately 177–195 kilometres depending on route variations
Västra Vätterleden offers a beautiful hike through mixed landscapes — open countryside, forests, gentle hills and cultural landscapes — with opportunities for detours and side trips.

Area:
The trail begins at Stenkällegården north of Karlsborg within Tiveden National Park and continues southwards, sometimes close to Lake Vättern’s shoreline, sometimes through forests and countryside. Along the way the route passes historic sites such as Forsvik’s canal locks and the beautiful timber town of Hjo, where you can rest, eat and resupply.
From Hjo the trail continues southwards, crossing the wooded ridge of Hökensås — a nature reserve with rolling moraine landscapes, lakes and heaths — before moving on through mixed natural scenery and agricultural land towards Fagerhult. Here the trail continues via woodlands and pastures to Mullsjö, the southern terminus where it connects with the Smålandsleden.

Think about:
- Always take great care when using fire. Use designated fire pits only and make sure the fire is fully extinguished. Fire bans always apply in nature reserves and may also be in force across the entire region during dry periods.
- Do not litter. Use the rubbish bins provided along the trail.
- Off-road driving is prohibited in nature and on marked trails.
- Show consideration for local residents and stay on the trail.
- Avoid hiking during the moose hunting season.
- Do not walk across fields with growing crops.
- Fishing is only permitted with a valid fishing permit or the landowner’s consent.
