Farm Shop, Vegetable Growing and Gotland Sheep

Experience small-scale diversity at Mofalla Farm. Here, green asparagus, pumpkins, and tulips are grown. In the farm shop, you can find locally produced products depending on the season. The farm is also home to Gotland sheep, chickens, and rabbits. It is located a few kilometres west of central Hjo. The farm is run by Maria Lennartsson and Anders Dahlgren.

THE FARM SHOP

In 2020, the farm shop was completed in part of the barn at Mofalla Farm, a few kilometres west of Hjo. Opening hours and the range of products vary throughout the year and follow the seasons. The shop is mainly open on weekends but occasionally offers self-service.

In early spring, tulips are available for self-picking, and in May and June, you can find freshly harvested green asparagus. In the autumn, the focus is on pumpkins and cuts of lamb from the farm. In late autumn and winter, beautiful sheepskins are available.

The small-scale diversity is also reflected in the farm shop. When available, you can find eggs and apple juice from the farm. The shop also stocks products from other local producers.

OPENING HOURS

Feel free to check Mofalla Farm’s social media for up-to-date opening hours and events. You can also call before your visit to check if anyone is at the farm to assist you.

SELF-PICKING TULIPS

In early spring, when the tulips bloom, you can pick tulips yourself.

ABOUT MOFALLA FARM - GREEN ARENA FARM

In 2021, Mofalla Farm was certified as a Green Arena Farm >>. Green Arena is a concept within the Swedish Agricultural Society for the development of farms offering services in social care, education, and health. These services are adapted to the individual to achieve personal development and improved quality of life. Activities are based on the farm’s work with animals, nature, and gardening.

MORE ABOUT THE GREEN ASPARAGUS

Green asparagus is harvested around May-June. The harvest usually takes place in the first or second week of May, depending on how warm or cold the spring is. The soil needs to be at least 12°C. It’s hard to predict the exact timing, so check Mofalla Farm’s social media for more information. The harvest ends every year by Midsummer. The first harvest year was 2020, which had the shortest harvest season, approximately 16 days.

How to keep asparagus fresh in your fridge?

Did you know that the best way to store asparagus is to keep it well-chilled, standing in water? Let the asparagus stand in bundles, with just a few centimetres of water that you change daily. Despite the cold, the asparagus continues to grow slightly, but can easily be trimmed, like a cut flower, and stored for longer. If the tips open a little, it’s still perfectly edible.

Green Asparagus

Green or white? The answer is that white asparagus is harvested underground, while green asparagus is harvested above ground. There are many varieties for different purposes. Mofalla Farm chose a well-proven green variety that has good flavour regardless of how it is prepared. The plants were two years old when they were planted. The harvest begins gently in the third year (which was the 2020 season). In commercial farming, asparagus is rarely harvested for more than 10 years, but hobby growers can keep their plants for life. When asparagus is 22-25 cm above the ground, the shoots are cut, washed if necessary, bundled, and cooled.

GOTLAND SHEEP - TRADITIONAL SWEDISH BREED

Lambing takes place in the spring. The 2021 lambing at Mofalla Farm was the fifth in a row, resulting in about 30 lambs. Slaughtering occurs in the autumn. The skins are sent for processing and are available for sale in the winter.

The Gotland sheep originates from the Gotland outdoor sheep. Through selective breeding for size and fleece quality, the Gotland sheep has developed into an efficient breed for meat and fleece production. In the early 20th century, the outdoor sheep was bred for the production of curly, uniformly grey fleece. The new breed was named the fleece sheep, but this was changed at the end of the 20th century to Gotland sheep, as the name is more internationally recognised.
