Kihlbergsgården – Stora Torget

Located right on Hjo’s main square, Kihlbergsgården is a former merchant’s courtyard with a colourful past. From ironmongery to flower shops, opticians and more – the site tells the story of a town in motion.

A Courtyard of Commerce and Character

Kihlbergsgården has long been a centre for trade and enterprise. In earlier times, it was known as Fotagården. In the 1870s, it became an ironmonger’s yard, and in 1901, August Källmark took over both the shop and the property.

One of Källmark’s employees was Josef Kihlberg, who eventually took over the business. His company grew rapidly, expanding into wholesale trade and industrial production. Kihlberg became a millionaire – a remarkable story of local entrepreneurship. The ironmongery closed in 1968.

Many Trades Under One Roof

Over the years, various shops and businesses have occupied the buildings in the courtyard – including a grocery, flower shop, offices, a watchmaker, and an optician.

In the early 20th century, the corner shop known as Kihlberg’s Corner housed the spirits merchant C.A. Lindgren & Sons, adding yet another layer to the site’s history.

The buildings in the courtyard were originally constructed in the 1840s.
