The journey begins in Borås, a city whose history is tightly interwoven with trade and textiles. At Borås Museum, you will get an excellent introduction to life in the region through the ages. For those who want the city streets to tell their own story, the app Hej Borås is a perfect companion for a guided walk.
Before leaving the city limits, a detour to Hedared Stave Church is highly recommended. As Sweden’s only preserved medieval stave church, it offers a nearly sacred stillness that must be experienced in person. Take the opportunity to stop at Brobackens vedugnsbageri (stone oven bakery) for a 'fika' where the bread tastes exactly as authentic as the craftsmanship suggests.
The journey then continues towards Ulricehamn and the iconic Änglagård countryside. Here, you will encounter the beautiful settings immortalised in filmmaker Colin Nutley’s famous movies (House of angels). Whether you choose to see the landscape through a car window, from a bicycle saddle, or via a booked bus tour, it’s easy to see why these particular views came to represent the Swedish idyll.
To truly immerse yourself in history, we recommend an overnight stay at Torpa Stenhus. Sleeping in a setting dating back to the 15th century is the ultimate way to recharge for day two.
Day 2: The manors around the lake and the legacy of craftsmanship
After a night in a medieval atmosphere, you find yourself in the heart of the area depicted in Birgit Th. Sparre’s famous novel series, The Manors Around the Lake (Gårdarna runt sjön). The journey around Lake Åsunden leads you to places such as Hofsnäs Herrgård, Åsundsholm, and Hemma på Källebacka. It is a route lined with beauty and drama. While cycling is a popular choice here, the roads are excellent for those who prefer to drive; the views are just as grand regardless of your speed. For a deeper insight, you can book a guided tour through the Ulricehamn Guide Association.
We continue south towards Limmared and Glasets Hus (The House of Glass). Here, the focus is on the glass craftsmanship that has defined the town since the 18th century. If your trip happens to fall on a Tuesday or Saturday, don’t miss Limmareds Antik – a unique selection of second-hand finds, antiques, and retro items.
The final day is dedicated to the unique Förläggargårdsturen (The Merchant Manor Tour). This is a cultural-historical journey through Sjuhärad’s textile district, where grand merchant manors bear witness to a time when the region was the textile centre for all of Sweden. The tour is adapted for both bicycle and car, and many local accommodations offer ready-made cycling packages for those who want to feel the wind on their cheeks.
An essential stop is Rydals Museum, Sweden’s oldest preserved spinning mill. Here, you get a genuine insight into the rise of the industry, and the adjacent Rydals Herrgård serves lunch in a setting that breathes history. Continue towards Hyssna to visit the beautiful Hyssna Old Church and the local heritage centre, which together with the Kattunga Church Ruin stand as fine monuments to a bygone era.
Do you still have time before your 77 hours are up? Make one last detour to Gräne Gruva (Gräne Mine). Here, nature and industrial history meet in a setting that feels both raw and peaceful. A fitting finale for a journey through Sjuhärad’s rich history.
