Getting around Trollhättan and Vänersborg

You can easily travel both in Trollhättan and Vänersborg and between the cities using public transportation. The local transportation company Västtrafik manages both buses and trains in the area.

 

City buses

If you need to get around Trollhättan and Vänersborg there are several city bus lines that travel between different parts of the city. The best starting points for going with the bus to other places are the train station and main square in the city. You can check out the line maps to see the different bus lines and what stops they do around the city. You can also visit the Västtrafik website and search for specific stops.

Bus and train between Trollhättan and Vänersborg

You can also easily travel between Trollhättan and Vänersborg with either train or bus. 

There are 3 different bus lines that goes between Trollhättan and Vänersborg, lines 61, 65 and 66. Line 61 goes past the NÄL Hospital located between the cities, line 66 goes past the town of Vargön while line 65 is the quickest one and also makes a stop at Överby Shopping Center. A trip with line 65 between the train stations of Trollhättan and Vänersborg takes about 27 minutes. 

When it comes to train traffic, most trains are run by the company Västtrafik but also some by SJ, the biggest railroad company in Sweden. A trip between the cities with a train takes about 14 minutes and the trains go very often. 

There are also buses going to towns all around the municipalities of Trollhättan and Vänersborg like Sjuntorp, Vargön, Frändefors, Brålanda and Öxnered. 

Taking the bus to Överby Shopping Center

Between Trollhättan and Vänersborg is the Överby Shopping Center with stores selling electronics, food, clothes, home decor and much more. The best way to get here without a car is to take the line 65 bus from either Trollhättan or Vänersborg to the Överby Shopping Center bus stop. The trip takes only about 11-12 minutes. Can I bring my bike on the bus or train?

You can not bring your regular bike on the buses however it is allowed to bring your bike on Västtrafik's trains if there is room, without extra charge. No box bike or bike carts are allowed.  

For SJ's trains your bike needs to be able to be folded and be transported in a bike bag or stored in the baggage area. 

Västtrafik

The company Västtrafik runs the public transportation of trains, buses and more in this area of Sweden. In our area they are responsible for local buses but also trains and buses going between the cities, and to other cities in the region. 

You can visit Västtrafik's website and see all bus and train lines in the area and see local timetables, a perfect tool if you are looking for traveling in the area without a car. Visit Västtrafik's website here. 

Tickets

When travelling with local buses you can pay for your ticket on the bus using a credit card or you can pay using the Västtrafik-app. There are also several other alternatives when travelling with a bus or train. Either buying a Västtrafik refill card that you can use when paying or a Västtrafik Day ticket that is valid for 1-3 days, perfect if you want to explore the area during a couple of days.
