Day 1: Discover Koster by bike
Your adventure begins at the ferry terminal in Strömstad, where regular ferries take you to the Koster Islands from the North Harbour - with extra departures during the summer season. Leave the car behind in Strömstad; the Koster Islands are almost completely car-free, making them ideal for families.
Whether you bring your own bikes or rent them on the islands, one thing is certain: Koster is best explored on two wheels. Cycling is permitted on South Koster (Sydkoster), where well-marked, peaceful gravel roads make it easy and enjoyable to get around. Cycle past meadows, beaches and charming fishing villages, stopping whenever something catches your eye.
If you prefer a guided experience, you can choose from a wide range of family-friendly tours such as cycling, kayaking (Koster Adventures or Koster Kayak Tours) and cultural history excursions. For more information, please contact Douglas Lipkin (Visitor Coordinator) at +46 70 54 64 375 or the Tourist Information.
When hunger strikes, treat yourselves to one of the charming island restaurants on Koster. A standout choice is Kläpphagen, a beloved restaurant and bar on South Koster where the focus is on seasonal, sustainable cuisine cooked over open fire and wood-fired ovens. The menu changes throughout the year to highlight the best local produce, fresh fish and shellfish from the archipelago, and ingredients from trusted regional suppliers.
In the afternoon, don’t miss Naturum Kosterhavet, the national park’s visitor centre. With touch-tank aquariums, films, exhibitions and guided activities, it’s a fascinating stop for curious children and adults alike.
In the evening, choose from Koster’s wide range of restaurants. When it’s time to rest, you’ll find accommodation for every taste and budget - from campsites close to nature to cosy guesthouses and hotels.

Day 2: Snorkelling adventures and Strömstad shrimp
After a good night’s sleep and breakfast, set aside the morning for outdoor adventures in this unique archipelago. Cycle to one of Koster’s many beautiful beaches, take a refreshing swim and explore the underwater world of Kosterhavet National Park.
The Koster Fjord is one of Sweden’s most species-rich marine environments, home to over 6,000 known species above and another 6,000 below the surface. For snorkelling enthusiasts, the snorkel trail at Rörvik is a must. Located at a depth of 1–1.5 metres, it’s like an underwater nature trail, complete with information signs that help you identify what you see beneath the surface.

In the afternoon, take the Koster ferry back to Strömstad and enjoy some time in town. Stroll through the lively shopping streets, relax at a café or treat yourselves to dinner at one of the many excellent restaurants.
And of course - don’t leave without tasting fresh Strömstad shrimp. They are a local delicacy and a true symbol of the town. Spend the night at one of Strömstad’s comfortable hotels or guesthouses and enjoy the maritime atmosphere.

Day 3: Island hopping in the idyllic Hvaler archipelago
On day three, set course for Norway and the beautiful Hvaler archipelago. Take the ferry M/S Vesleø II from Strömstad to Skjærhalden - a scenic 50-minute journey across the sea.
Today is all about island hopping. Regular ferries connect the Hvaler islands, making it easy and fun to explore at your own pace. Step off where you like, swim, hike and enjoy the changing landscapes of smooth cliffs, sandy beaches and charming island communities.
A great family stop is Nordre Sandøy. Disembark at Sanne, where you’ll find lovely beaches nearby, including the popular Tresvika. From here, enjoy a pleasant walk to Makø, home to the charming Makø Sommercafé - perfect for a relaxed lunch. Children will love the small petting zoo with alpacas, hens, cats and more. There’s even accommodation here for those who decide they want to stay a little longer.
If time is limited, simply take the last ferry back to Skjærhalden - and onward to Strömstad if needed.
