A road trip through West Sweden – nature, culture and adventure!
West Sweden – a region with varied landscapes, a breathtaking coastline, glittering lakes and charming towns. Bohuslän with its fantastic archipelago, wild Dalsland with its masses of lakes and Västergötland, rich in history and culture – West Sweden offers contrasts, activities and unforgettable nature experiences, making it just perfect for a relaxing and exciting camping holiday with motorhome or car.
The journey starts in Gothenburg which is known for its laid back atmosphere, maritime style and lively and varied cultural scene. Highlights like Liseberg, World of Volvo, the Paddan boats and the city’s museums are easily reached on foot or by tram.
From the charming small coastal town of Strömstad you can reach the Koster Islands on a passenger ferry – perfect for an unforgettable outing.
Bohuslän is also a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking along the coastline and paddling kayaks in the archipelago are extremely popular activities.
The journey continues to Dalsland, a region with many lakes and forests. The Dalsland Canal and the aqueduct in Håverud are impressive. And if you’re a culture vulture then don’t miss a visit to Not Quite in Fengersfors, where there’s an exhibition space, an art gallery, a shop and cosy café.
Dalsland is moreover a paradise for cyclists. There are many gravel roads leading through forests, by lakes and over rolling hills. Walkers are equally well served. The Kroppefjäll nature reserve is right next to the campsite at Ragneruds Vandringsdestination.
Västergötland – culture, history and food experiences
The last stage is to Västergötland, an area with a blend of nature, culture and history. Läckö Castle is an unmissable highlight, where there’s also a restaurant serving local cuisine.
Not far from Läckö Castle lies Kinnekulle table mountain, which offers fantastic views. Historic spots and varied nature make the mountain a walkers’ paradise.
Karlsborg Fortress, built in the 19th century, is a fascinating destination. And a visit to Västergötland isn’t complete if you haven’t experienced a trip along the Göta Canal, which was also built in the 1800s and is today a popular destination for boaters, cyclists and hikers.
In Borås creativity, innovative design and Street Art meet. Don’t miss a visit to the Textile Museum or to the Abecita Museum for pop art and photography. Before your journey ends and you head back to Gothenburg it’s worth stopping in Alingsås, Sweden’s Fika Capital.
