Karl's grave
Vänersborg

A part of the Pilgrim Path Göta Älv

You will find a beautiful path around the canal called Karl's grave. The trail is part of the Pilgrim Path Göta Älv, and halfway you pass the lock of Brinkebergskulle. The track is a circular trail of approx. 8.5 km and you move all the time in fantastic nature with the canal by your side.

About Karls grav (Karl's Grave)

The Karls grav canal connects the Vänern Bay Vassbotten with the Göta River. Its purpose is to allow ship traffic to bypass the rapids at Vargön and Önafors. Construction of the canal began during the reign of Charles IX, but ship traffic did not start until 1752. The canal connects to the Göta River via the Brinkebergskulle lock, which was designed by Christopher Polhem in 1752, while the current lock was completed in 1916.

Exercise around Karl's Grave

The trail is perfect for a brisk walk, run or bike ride. With the starting point at Gropbron, you pass Quality Hotel Vänersborg and follow the canal with the water by your side at all time. The road surface is mostly small gravel and the terrain is mostly flat, but you can count on the occasional hill. The exercise trail is a circular trail - follow the canal all the way to Brinkebergskulle lock.

Pass over the lock bridge and then continue your way in the opposite direction on the other side along the canal, or why not stop to watch boats travelling up or down the lock or to eat a prawn sandwich at the café? You move in fantastic nature all the way, and the distance is about 8.5 km long. You pass several historical points along the way, and if you want, you can pass Åbon's outdoor gym in Onsjö.
