Riksteatern is very much a living grassroots movement with over 40,000 members in 230 Riksteatern associations. Each association curates its own repertoire, purchases, markets, and arranges performing arts events in its locality. Anyone interested in theater, dance, or other performing arts can become members.

Vänersborg's theater association is a part of Riksteatern. Riksteatern's vision is to create mental collisions in many languages to set thoughts and emotions in motion. Through its activities, Riksteatern aims to ensure that every citizen participates, has influence, and feels involved in society.

In Vänersborg, the Riksteater association organizes various types of performing arts, such as theater, music, and dance performances. Most of the organizing work is done voluntarily and during leisure time.

We in Vänersborg are proud to have one of the country's finest regional theaters. The lovely venue can accommodate up to 340 people, and the auditorium has excellent acoustics. The theater is used for conferences, lectures, dance, music, and various cultural events. Vänersborgs Teater is located adjacent to Folkets Hus.

The theater was inaugurated in grand style in 1869, with a guest performance by the Royal Theater, which performed Donizetti's "L'elisir d'amore" in four acts. On February 27, 1910, a fire broke out in the theater, and it was completely destroyed. Due to a deed of gift from 1863, the theater had to be restored, which was indeed done. In 1940, the theater was renovated beyond recognition, only to be restored to its current condition in 1987.
