The lock day is back!

Experience Lock Day in Trollhättan

Enjoy Lock Day in Trollhättan – a celebration of beautiful nature, fascinating history, live music, a local food and craft market, and of course, the classic Swedish open shrimp sandwich.

Children can sing and have fun with The Alphabet Choir, led by Ayla from Swedish children's television, while country, soul and Americana singer Martin Almgren takes the stage later in the evening.

Lock passage with Elfkungen

Enjoy a free boat passage through the locks aboard Elfkungen. Departures run continuously, but times may change depending on canal traffic, so please arrive early. Free tickets are available at the Innovatum Science Center tent on a first-come, first-served basis.

4:30 PM

Art Walk through the Lock Area

Join David Sjöqvist from the Art Gallery for a guided walk exploring the public art around the locks. The tour starts at the Canal Museum.

4:30 PM, 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM

Guided Tour of the Canal Control Centre

Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Canal Control Centre with the Swedish Maritime Administration. Limited number of places available.

5:00 PM

The Alphabet Choir

A fun family performance where children become part of the choir. Using their voices, bodies, rhythms and songs, everyone is invited to sing along.

The programme features original alphabet songs mixed with well-known children's favourites. Ayla Kabaca, well known from Swedish children's TV (Bolibompa) and the children's sing-along concerts at Skansen, leads the performance together with cellist, actress and singer Emeli Jeremias and pianist/guitarist Klas Backman.

Historical Lock Walk – "From the 1800s to Today"

Join historian Henrik Olsson for a guided walk through the history of the Trollhättan locks. The tour starts at the Canal Museum.

Martin Almgren

Swedish singer-songwriter Martin Almgren, winner of Idol Sweden 2015, is known for his powerful, soulful voice and authentic storytelling. Blending country, soul and Americana, he delivers heartfelt performances filled with warmth, emotion and energy.

4:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Market & Activities

  • Shop for locally produced food and handmade crafts.
  • Visit the Canal Control Centre to learn how boats navigate the canal, including bridge openings and lock operations.
  • Board vessels from the Swedish Maritime Administration.
  • Explore vintage fire engines at Höljebacka Fire Museum and try spraying water into the canal.
  • Family crafts and activities hosted by the Church of Sweden.
  • Watch live blacksmithing demonstrations and try your hand at forging with blacksmiths from the historic NOHAB forge.
  • See traditional rope-making demonstrations by the Ropewalk Museum.
  • Discover a classic NOHAB diesel engine on display by the Friends of NOHAB Diesel.
  • The Canal Museum stays open until 8:00 PM.
  • Learn about the construction of the new lock system from the Swedish Transport Administration and the City of Trollhättan.

Test the interactive stations or walk calmly around the experience centre and take in all the fascinating information and history there.
