Lake Hullsjön
Trollhättan
Hullsjön is one of the finest birdwatching sites in Västra Götaland and an important resting and breeding area for many bird species. Around 200 bird species are observed annually at this bird lake.
About Hullsjön
Hullsjön is located only about 7 km from Trollhättan city centre and is a popular lake for birdwatchers as well as a beautiful excursion destination for everyone. The lake is very nutrient-rich and only just over one metre deep. It is managed to preserve and restore its qualities as a bird lake. Among other things, the shoreline meadows (maderna) around the lake are kept open through grazing and mowing.
Hullsjön is part of a nature reserve, and it is forbidden to enter the meadows and reed beds during most of the year. You can read more about the lake, view a map, and check regulations for visitors by downloading this map.
The birds
Along the shores there is rich and lush shoreline vegetation, and in the north and south the lake is surrounded by large meadow areas that are flooded during high water in spring and autumn. This makes the lake an important resting place for ducks, swans and geese.
During the summer months, the water level drops and the meadows dry out, allowing grazing. This creates suitable breeding habitats mainly for wading birds. Characteristic species at Hullsjön include greylag goose, mallard, northern shoveler, tufted duck and ferruginous duck, as well as marsh harrier, common snipe, little ringed plover and yellow wagtail.
In total, around 200 different bird species are observed annually in and around the lake. These include whooper swan, smew, osprey, merlin, corn crake, crane, ruff, double snipe, green sandpiper and common tern. Occasionally, rarer species such as the white stork are also observed.
Reported sightings can be viewed on Artportalen here.
Bird towers and hide
On the western side of the lake there are two birdwatching towers, both just a short walk from parking areas along a path. At the northern one there is also a detailed information board about Hullsjön and the bird species that can be seen there.
On the northeastern side there is a bird hide that visitors can enter and observe from. It is also only a short walk from a nearby parking area along road 44.
