This is why Dalsland is Sweden’s gravel destination

Yep, we’re daring to stick our necks out and state that Dalsland is Sweden’s best gravel destination. You might be wondering why. Here are four reasons:

1. We love gravel!

It’s actually true. Here in Dalsland we’re enthusiastic about our fabulous gravel roads. But not just that, there’s a broad variation of different surfaces to cycle on here, everything from narrow forest tracks to larger gravel and country roads winding past lakes and fields.

2. The unspoilt nature

The scenery in Dalsland is unique. It encompasses everything from flat grassland to deep and hilly forests separated by long, narrow lakes. Yes, there are actually over 2000 lakes and tarns here. You can cycle for hours if you want to and just see trees, lakes and meadows. Tranquil and enjoyable cycling.

3. Business investment

In Dalsland there are a lot of hard working business people spending time, energy and resources to look after gravel cyclists. They arrange cycle friendly accommodation, flexible bike hire solutions, guided cycling events, nice places to stop for a cuppa or lunch, and come up with great suggestions for cycle routes.

4. We have Sweden’s most adventurous cycle trails

Adventurous can mean many things. It can be watching the boats on the Dalsland Canal, cycling into the sunset, stopping for a skinny dip in a forest lake, seeing a moose, meeting other cycling enthusiasts or finishing off a day’s cycling with a sauna and delicious dinner. What does a cycle adventure look like for you?

Travel by car

From Gothenburg: Around 2 hours

From Stockholm: Around 4.5 hours

From Oslo: Around 2 hours

Travel by train

It’s easy to get the Västtåget train from Gothenburg to Mellerud and Åmål. Onboard the Västtrafik trains you can bring your bike if there is room (which there usually is). On the SJ trains you can only bring your bike if it has been packed into a bike travel bag. Unfortunately you can’t take your bike onboard the Västtrafik buses.

Through education, business development, and marketing, the project creates conditions for Dalsland to become Sweden's best and one of Europe's top destinations for gravel cycling. The project is a joint effort in Dalsland and is partially funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and Framtidsbygder Dalsland Munkedal and Årjäng (Leader).
