A journey through medical breakthroughs

Located in central Gothenburg, the Medical History Museum showcases everything from bloodletting instruments to the history of psychiatry. Personal stories and life destinies are interwoven with objects from Sahlgrenska Hospital. Here, art from the study programs at Lillhagen Hospital is displayed alongside some of Gothenburg’s major medical discoveries.

The museum’s permanent exhibition tells the story of Gothenburg’s medical history over the past 400 years. Based on collections from Sahlgrenska Hospital and Lillhagen Hospital, visitors are taken on a historical journey—from the first hospitals and Sahlgren’s will to groundbreaking medical advances and the post-war expansion of healthcare infrastructure. Personal stories, unique artifacts, and historical insights offer visitors a deeper understanding of how perspectives on humanity, treatment methods, and living conditions have evolved over time.

From bloodletting to modern healthcare

The exhibition highlights the efforts made by Gothenburg as a city and Sweden as a country to improve public health and develop Swedish society. Explore different healthcare locations and professions throughout history—from the era of bloodletting to modern medical care.
In addition to Gothenburg’s medical history, the exhibition also reflects on the development of international medicine and Swedish society as a whole.

How to get here

The Medical History Museum is centrally located at Östra Hamngatan 11. The nearest public transport stop is Lilla Bommen, which can be easily reached by bus or tram. If you’re arriving by car, parking is available at the Nordstan shopping center.
