Ljungleden – A Regional Cycle Route between Gothenburg and Falköping

The name Ljungleden comes from the Swedish word for heather – Västergötland region’s county flower – which grows in profusion alongside the trail.  The Ljungleden links together two of Sweden’s most popular cycle trails – The Kattegattleden in Gothenburg and the Ätradalsleden in Falköping, making a longer circular route which is ideal for a nice scenic cycling holiday through West Sweden.

Facts about the Ljungleden

Length: The Ljungleden is 170 km long and takes you from Gothenburg to Falköping.

Terrain: Mostly asphalt on low trafficked roads and cycle trails, some gravel sections.

Timing: Decide yourself where you want to start and finish cycling. There are many lovely stretches for shorter daytrips and plenty of accommodation if you want to cycle from place to place. The Västtågen trains stop at several places along the route and depending on availability you can ususally take your bike on board if you don’t want to cycle the whole route.

Waymarking: The trail is signposted as a regional cycle route.

The Ljungleden stretches from Gothenburg to Falköping and is as convenient for shorter day trips as it is for a longer holiday, with lovely stops along the way. If you need to hire bikes you can book via Evertrek.

Remember: Always wear a cycling helmet, be considerate in traffic and dress for the weather. Take a water bottle and something to eat in case your energy levels dip. It’s always a good idea to take a repair kit with tools and an extra inner tube in case you get a puncture.

What is a regional cycle route?

A regional cycle route is especially suitable for a short cycling holiday or day trip. The route should be between 65-200 kilometres and fulfil several criteria according to Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration. The route should, among other things, be safe for cyclists, offer attractive natural surroundings and places to visit , and be well signposted, with clear information including maps and route descriptions.
